Since the Law on Commercial Arbitration was drafted in 2010, there have been only a few arbitration institutions, of which the Vietnam International Arbitration Center (VIAC) is the biggest. At that time, VIAC only handled about 50 cases, most of which were low-value disputes. There are 44 registered arbitration centers with more than 700 arbitrators and 17 registered mediation centers with more than 100 mediators (according to the Ministry of Justice's data). In 2022, VIAC alone handled 280 cases, including infrastructure construction disputes worth up to US$200 million (according to VIAC’s statistics). This indicates the strong development of arbitration and mediation in Vietnam.
Specialized arbitration areas such as international commercial arbitration, maritime, construction, energy or investment arbitration, etc., are also receiving increasing attention. On 17th April 2023, the International Construction Arbitration Conference in Ho Chi Minh City 2023 will be held for the first time by the Vietnam Society of Construction Law (SCL). Arbitrator Nguyen Manh Dung is pleased to be invited to speak as the ICC Task Force’s member on ADR and Arbitration in Vietnam.
